Gamma-Amino-Butyric Acid, most commonly referred to as GABA, is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS) and is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.

Reduced GABA levels, or impaired GABA function in the brain, has been shown to contribute to certain psychiatric and neurological disorders including anxiety, depression and insomnia.

As the major inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA counteracts overexcitation in the brain, and has been described as acting like a ‘brake’ on the neuronal circuitry during times of increased stress.
