What causes deficiency?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral involved in many biological processes, and diet is the main source.

Unfortunately, soil depletion may lead to lower content in the foods commonly eaten. Advanced age, individuals with gastrointestinal absorption issues as well as smoking and alcohol intake, may also affect levels. Certain disease states such as cancer, HIV and auto-immune disease are often associated with selenium deficiency as well.

The human body does not synthesise selenium and therefore dietary and supplemental selenium is required.
